Motion Graphics V1

I’ve always had an interest in creating motion graphics. I studied it a bit back in school and have touched on it here and there over the years, but recently realized how much more impactful moving media can be in the context of advertising online. This is just a collection of what I’ve made in a lot of my practice sessions. I’ll continue to update this page as i create more interesting work.

If it isn’t already apparent, I haven’t yet learned how to compress images so that they retain their full-ish quality while still being a reasonable file size. So, apologies for the crunchy-looking images.

Back in high school and college, I had this hobby of taking snippets of weird or interesting footage and overlaying them with song lyrics. I dunno, it was a Tumblr thing, probably. I still think it’s a fun exercise sometimes, though. Like, if I’m in the mood to design something, but don’t wanna go through the hurdle of generating a project brief for a fake company. It’s quicker and simpler to take a song I’m into and design a graphic based on that.

This one is based on a song called “Pyramid God” from an awesome Greek band, Septicflesh. I found this neat image of a segmented pyramid and wanted to try separating the elements in Photoshop first, before being everything into After Effects.

I think the overlapping, layered look to the pyramid gives a subtle, interesting effect.

After a few warm-up projects, I knew I wanted to do an animated version of Tool’s “Ænima” album. I remember seeing it animated within one of their music videos, I think, but wanted to try tackling it myself.

The flaming television screen was always such a cool visual to me. And it seemed like such an easy thing to accomplish - blur a white square, plop in some stock fire footage, desaturate, duplicate, and rotate. Boom, done.

The eye-ridden background proved to be the most difficult part, and I still don’t feel like I fully hit the nail that I was intending. But oh well, lessons were learned.
