Zanarkand Abes /// Logo Design

Final Fantasy X is one of those games from when I was kid that just stuck with me. They packed so much good stuff into that sucker. The music, the story, the wild 90s design aesthetics. Too good.

I was talking with someone recently and it came up as a common interest we both had, and I guess it ignited a little phase of me listening to the soundtrack in the background and re-watching scenes from the game on YouTube. I’ve also been getting some practice in with futuristic typography, but I always struggle with coming up with fake company names or clever little phrases. So hey, I used something from this really cool game I like.

The Zanarkand Abes are this fictitious sports team in the game and, as far as I know, don’t have any identification or branding that the game designers bothered to give them. I thought I’d give it a shot and make a neat little futuristic wordmark. The method I used for constructing the letters has a bunch of limitations so it was tricky getting some of the letterforms to be readable as, you know, letters. Thicknesses had to all match, only increments of 45-degree angles were allowed, everything had to be the same height, yada yada. I gave it another 15-degree lean at the end just to give it some forward motion, then boom. Done.

I think it’s neat to look at.
